Triple test: BMW i4 vs Tesla Model 3 vs Polestar 2

Since its debut several years ago, the Tesla Model 3 has been the yardstick by which not only every four-door electric saloon, but almost every single premium electric car has been judged, and for good reason. The Model 3’s practicality, rapid charge speed and performance outshines even some £100,000 flagship electric models. It was the UK’s most popular electric car in 2021, but now the BMW i4 and Polestar 2 (the second model from Volvo’s spinoff brand) are giving the Tesla Model 3 a run for its money.

The Polestar 2 is an electric coupe-SUV that boasts muscular, minimalistic styling, modern cabin design and Google-powered infotainment. Meanwhile, Germany’s entry into the hotly contested electric company-car battle is the BMW i4, which puts a zero-emissions spin on the brand’s winning four-door formula.

Cons: Expensive compared to rivals, all-wheel-drive reserved for M50, no ‘frunk’ storage

Polestar 2

Tesla Model 3

Pros: Class-leading performance and range, minimalist interior, Supercharger access

Cons: Both rivals here more fun, no hatchback, no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

The Tesla Model 3 has enjoyed five years at or near the top of the EV sales charts, persuading more people to make the switch to electric and serving as the catalyst for many carmakers to launch their own zero-emissions models for the masses.
