Volvo S90 updated for 2020: now hybrid-only

The Volvo S90 is now only available in T8 'Recharge' plug-in hybrid guise, priced from £55,180

Volvo has updated its S90 executive saloon and V90 estate – with the former now only available in plug-in hybrid guise. As well as simplifying the model range, Volvo has add new interior trim choices, revised lighting and the option of an enhanced Bowers & Wilkins stereo.

In addition to the trim and styling changes, Volvo has also added the ‘Recharge’ badging first seen on the XC40 Recharge T5 to its large saloon and estate models. The saloon gets the more powerful 385bhp T8 drivetrain (S90 Recharge T8), while the V90 uses the new 335bhp T6 unit – badged V90 Recharge T6.

The Volvo S90 T8 is only available in R-Design and Inscription specifications, costing £55,180 and £56,030 respectively. In addition, Volvo offers a variety of option 'packs' – the Lounge Pack adds things like a sliding glass roof and 360-degree camera, while the Winter Pack gets heated seats and a heated steering wheel.

In some markets, Volvo will offer the S90 with 48-volt mild-hybrid engines. However, in the UK these will only be available on the V90 estate; Volvo hasn’t revealed how much more economical these versions are, but claims the system can lower emissions by as much as 15%.

The updated V90 is priced from £40,475, while the T6 plug-in hybrid models cost from £55,180 in R-Design trim. The Volvo V90 T6 Inscription costs £56,030 – the same as the S90 T8, despite its lower power output. All models are available to order now.

Both the S90 and V90 get new foglights, a new spoiler, and a new lower front bumper, as well as new colour and wheel options. In addition, the V90 also gets revised tail-lights with scrolling indicators.

Inside, buyers get the option of new wool-blend seats first seen on the XC90 in 2019, plus a man-made leather option on top trim levels. All models get two USB-C points in the rear, while wireless phone charging is available as an option.

The final new feature is an Advance Air Cleaner, which allows drivers to monitor interior air quality and clean the cabin via the central portrait touchscreen.
