New Ford E-Transit Courier is an electric van based on the Ford Puma

Ford has revealed its newest electric van, which is the size of a Ford Fiesta and is due on sale in 2024

Ford has unveiled its smallest electric van: the new E-Transit Courier. The Courier sits below the Connect, Custom and the full-size Transit in the Ford Commercial Vehicles lineup, with the electric E-Transit Courier version joining the existing E-Transit and E-Transit Custom in the brand’s electric van range.

Due on sale in late 2024, the new Ford E-Transit Courier is a little smaller than most other electric vans currently on sale, utilising a modified version of the Ford Puma’s underpinnings. Its closest rivals will be the Citroen e-Berlingo, Peugeot e-Partner and Nissan Townstar EV. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but you can expect the plug-in Ford van to be at the affordable end of the current small electric van market given its compact size – potentially starting from under £30,000.

Ford remains coy about the new E-Transit Courier’s battery and range figures, but the Blue Oval has stated that its new small electric van will utilise a 134bhp front-mounted electric motor and will benefit from 100kW DC rapid charging. When connected to a compatible public rapid charger, Ford says the E-Transit can be charged from 10-80% in just 35 minutes.

Given the E-Transit Courier sits on a modified version of the Ford Puma’s platform, we expect that the hotly-anticipated EV version of that car – due to arrive in 2024 – will share the Transit’s powertrain. With a battery size of around 50kWh, it’s feasible that both models could have a range in excess of 200 miles.

For now, we know that the new Ford E-Transit Courier will get a sharp-looking exterior, reminiscent of the recently-announced Ford Explorer electric SUV. Inside, E-Transit Courier buyers can expect Ford’s new SYNC4 infotainment system, which here is displayed on two 12-inch screens: a digital instrument cluster alongside a central touchscreen. This arrives pre-installed with Ford’s latest software, however, drivers have access to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto if they’d rather use their phone.

Perhaps the most stand-out feature of the new E-Transit Courier’s interior is the optional ‘Office Pack’. As seen on the larger E-Transit, this includes a special steering wheel which can fold out into a makeshift table. It also includes a few extra interior lighting elements to make working in your van even easier.

The E-Transit Courier will only be available in single-cab form in the UK – foreign markets will also get a double-cab variant. The new van boasts a 2.9m2 load area, which Ford says is sufficient for two Euro-size pallets. Maximum payload is 700kg, while the electric Courier can tow a trailer weighing up to 750kg. There’s also a small 44-litre ‘frunk’ under the bonnet, which should be useful for storing the van’s charging cables.

As mentioned, the Ford E-Transit Courier will go into production next year, after the regular petrol and diesel Transit Courier models enter the market in summer 2023. An E-Tourneo Courier passenger van is also due to arrive in the near future, swapping the E-Transit Courier’s large load area for potentially up to seven seats.
