New 2024 Ford E-Tourneo Courier is an electric lifestyle MPV

Based on the E-Transit Courier electric van, the Tourneo boasts big practicality and a zero-emission powertrain

The MPV is making a comeback: the new Ford E-Tourneo Courier is a compact, van-derived electric people carrier with space for five and their luggage. It’ll be built alongside the forthcoming electric Puma SUV – with which the Courier shares a platform – at the maker’s factory in Romania from mid-2024.

Based on the recently revealed Ford E-Transit Courier, the Tourneo is set to be the smallest MPV in the maker’s range and will be available with a choice of petrol and electric power. The EV uses a single 134bhp electric motor powering the front wheels. 

Battery size hasn’t been confirmed, but Ford says the car will be capable of 100kW rapid charging – like the Citroen e-Berlingo and Peugeot Rifter – for a 10-80% top-up in “under 35 minutes”. The E-Tourneo’s official range is still under wraps, though Ford says that charge speed is sufficient for replenishing 54 miles of range in 10 minutes.

The company also claims the E-Tourneo Courier will benefit from a one-pedal drive mode for "​​more energy-efficient driving in busy cities”. You’ll be able to pre-condition the cabin and battery while charging to “maximise range and comfort”.

Far more practical than the old petrol model, the E-Tourneo Courier dimensions means it now boasts a 570-litre boot with all five seats in place – 175 litres more than before, despite still measuring less than 4.4m in length. With the rear seats folded flat, the new car claims 2,162 litres of space filled to the roof – almost as much as a Volkswagen ID. Buzz. In addition, every E-Tourneo Courier gets a 44-litre ‘frunk’, allowing space under the bonnet for the charging cables.

Design wise, the E-Tourneo shares most of its styling with the Transit Courier van – albeit with a big glass area for the rear-seat occupants. Its boxy shape will help with practicality (as mentioned above) but it also gives the car an almost SUV-like appeal. This is further emphasised by the cladding around the wheelarches and along the sills, and also by the silver front and rear scuff plates.

Inside, the E-Tourneo Courier get’s Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, operable via a 12-inch central touchscreen. This is complimented further by a set of 12-inch digital dials – all within a “floating instrument panel design” for “improved space and visibility”. We’ve not had a chance to have a poke around the new Courier, but it looks as if storage will play a big part in the car’s appeal – with deep cubbies between the front seats, plus others dotted around the cabin. All versions get sliding rear doors, too.

Prices and specs haven’t been announced, but Ford has confirmed that the EcoBoost petrol model will come with a choice of Active, Titanium and Trend trims, with standard equipment including a built-in modem for over-the-air updates, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; the petrol model gets a smaller eight-inch screen.

With production of the E-Tourneo Courier scheduled for the second half of 2024, we don’t expect prices to be set in stone for some time. However, given its size and the cars it will be competing with – the aforementioned Citroen and Peugeot, plus practicality-focused models like the Kia Soul and MG ZS EV – we’d expect a price of between £33,000-£35,000, with top-spec versions nudging £40k fully-loaded.
