New 2022 SsangYong Korando e-Motion electric SUV: prices, specs and details

SsangYong’s first electric car goes on sale in the UK in early 2022, with prices starting from £30,495; another three zero-emissions models are planned by 2025

SsangYong Korando e-Motion

This is the SsangYong Korando e-Motion: the electric version of the Korean brand’s compact SUV that's set to arrive in the UK later this year, after first being teased back in July 2020. It has a range of 211 miles and rivals the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia e-Niro, MG ZS EV and Vauxhall Mokka-e.

It’s available in three trim levels: ELX, Ventura and Ultimate, with the entry-level version starting from £30,495 after the recently reduced plug-in car grant (PiCG) has been deducted. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and reversing camera, as well as safety systems like autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and speed-limit warnings.

Upgrading to mid-range Ventura trim (£34,955) adds LED headlights, faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen and a charging cable. Finally, the range-topping Ultimate (£37,995) features a powered tailgate, front and rear parking sensors, a heat pump and wireless smartphone charging, as well as power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, plus heated rear seats. Neither Venture nor Ultimate trim is eligible for the government grant.

All versions of the Korando e-Motion get the same 61.5kWh battery and 211-mile range, which is far less than the almost 300 miles the 64kWh Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric can achieve. The recently introduced MG ZS EV Long Range, meanwhile, boasts a 273-mile range from its larger 72.6kWh battery.

The Korando e-Motion uses a single electric motor that produces 188bhp and 360Nm of torque, which makes it the most powerful Korando in the line-up. Top speed stands at 97mph, while 0-62mph takes nine seconds in the front-wheel drive electric SUV.

As opposed to a single 'B' mode for the regenerative braking, the e-Motion has three levels you can switch between using steering-wheel-mounted paddles. It also gets a seven-year warranty, a 551-litre boot and can recharge at up to 100kW. That means from a fast enough rapid-charging point, topping up from 20-80% will take around half an hour. Fully recharging the battery from a home wallbox will take around 11 hours.
