2022 Lexus ES: updates, trim levels and prices

Lexus has revised its rival to the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class for 2022, with the ES 300h’s updates focusing on styling, safety and handling.

The hybrid-only saloon was introduced to the UK back in 2019, and is among several hybrid offerings from Lexus, including the UX, NX and RX SUVs. The Lexus ES 300h is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as a part of a "self-charging" hybrid powertrain.

The new ES has received some minor styling updates, particularly to the front grille and headlights, with higher-spec models also featuring Lexus’ 'Bladescan' adaptive LED headlight technology, previously seen on the LS flagship saloon, and the RX SUV.

Top-of-the-range ES Takumi cars can also be fitted with cameras in place of conventional door mirrors, like you’ll find on the Audi e-tron SUV or Honda e. Lexus claims these virtual door mirrors have also been revised to perform better in low light conditions – such as in bad weather, or at night. 

All but the base ES model will also be fitted with a new 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, which can be accessed via voice control, trackpad or just by tapping the screen. The new Lexus saloon features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, too.

Lexus says it has also made changes to the ES’s suspension to provide a better driving experience, improve responsiveness and ride comfort. The ES F Sport model’s adaptive variable suspension has also been revised, with a new actuator and internals, for improved ride comfort, stability and steering response.

The ES’s electronic braking system has also seen some updates, in addition to a new brake pedal design, for better driver control. Lexus has also worked to reduce the amount of vibrations felt by drivers when depressing the brake pedal. As the ES isn’t available as a plug-in hybrid like many other models in this class, it relies on regenerative braking to charge its batteries.

Finally, all versions of the new ES will feature the brand’s latest Lexus Safety System+, which includes a number of active safety and driver assistance features. This is in addition to new exterior colour, new upholstery and new wheel design options. 

The new Lexus ES is on sale now in the UK, with prices starting from £35,905 for the base model. Above the entry-level model are four trim levels: Premium Edition, Premium Pack, F Sport and Takumi, with a selection of option packs which can be added to certain versions.
